The Khar police arrested a man on Monday for allegedly killing his wife and seriously injuring another man, who he suspected was having an affair with his wife. The couple, who worked as labourers, lived on the footpath with their three children on road number one in Khar (West).

According to the police, the incident took place at 3am on Monday in Khar (West) when the accused, Ravi Gowda, 42, and his wife Shantabai, 40, were sleeping on the footpath. When Gowda woke up, he spotted their neighbour Chandu sitting next to Shantabai.

“Gowda suspected his wife of having an affair. On seeing them both together, he got angry and started assaulting Chandu,” said Sukhlal Varpe, police inspector at Khar police station, adding, “The duo was drunk at the time of the fight.”

“When Shantabai tried to intervene, Gowda picked up a paver block and repeatedly hit it on her head. He then attacked Chandu,” said Varpe.

An autorickshaw driver, who witnessed the incident, informed the police. “When we reached the spot, we found Shantabai and Chandu lying in a pool of blood. We rushed them to hospital, where Shantabai was declared dead before admission,” said another officer.

Chandu, who sustained serious head injuries, has been admitted at Bhabha hospital. He is unconscious and his condition is critical.

The police have arrested Gowda on charges of murder and attempt to murder.
