A 26-year-old man and his 25-year-old girlfriend whom he murdered by slitting her throat at Kalachowkie on Sunday, had a suicide pact, sources said.

The police said the accused, Prasad Sawant, an event manager, and the woman, Ekta Talwadkar, had been having an affair for 11 years. When Talwadkar’s parents told her to break it off with Sawant, the two decided to kill themselves, sources said.

The two decided to meet on Sunday to commit suicide, sources said. But, after slitting Talwadkar’s throat, Sawant could not bring up the courage to kill himself. “He ran from the scene fearing people would beat him up and an hour later, he surrendered to the police,” the source said. Sawant also appeared to be drunk, the police said.

Talwadkar is a resident of NM Joshi Road and used to work with a travel agency. Sawant is a resident of Denu Compound, Lalbaug. Around 7.15pm, after the two met, Sawant slit Talwadkar’s throat with a sharp weapon on GD Ambekar Marg.

Locals took an injured Talwadkar to KEM Hospital where she was declared dead before admission. Her post mortem will be conducted at the hospital.

“The two were having an affair for 11 years, but the woman’s parents were opposed to it. This may have led to the murder. We are investigating the reason for the accused taking such a drastic step,” said Ashok Dudhe, deputy commissioner of police (Zone IV).

He said there were some contradictions in Sawant’s statements and they were in the process of registering a case. Later, statements will be recorded for clarity on the sequence of events and motive. The accused will be taken for medical tests and will be produced in court on Monday.
