Upset that she spurned his advances, the man dragged the teenager out of her house, slit her throat and stabbed her in the stomach, outside her house in a slum in Bhiwandi, on Wednesday.

Upset that she spurned his advances, a man, in his early 20s, dragged a 17-year-old girl out of her house, slit her throat and stabbed her in the stomach, outside her house in a slum near Kamatghar, Bhiwandi, on Wednesday. While the girl, Payal Paswan, died on the spot, the Bhiwandi city police have picked up the man, Dheeraj, for questioning, based on a complaint filed by the girl’s sister Rekha, 28.

According to the police, the incident took place at 3am, when Rekha and Payal were at home. “Dheeraj locked the houses in the neighbourhood and broke open the door to Payal’s house. As he was forcing Payal to come out with him, Rekha tried to stop her. In a fit of rage, Dheeraj kicked Rekha, after which she fell unconscious. He then dragged Payal to the corridor, slit her throat and stabbed her in the stomach,” said a senior officer from the Bhiwandi city police station.

At 5am, when some women from the neighbourhood came out to fill water, they found the girl lying dead and her sister unconscious inside. “They then unlocked the neighbours’ doors,” the officer said.

In her statement to the police, Rekha said Dheeraj and her sister used to work at the same manufacturing unit. He had proposed marriage to her, but Payal declined his proposal. Tired of his constant harassment, Payal had stopped going to work for the past 15 days, said Rekha.

“We have registered a case against the accused under section 302 (punishment for murder) and 449 (house-trespass in order to commit offence punishable with death) of the Indian Penal Code,” the police officer said.
