The Mumbai police is looking for a 25-year-old man, who allegedly murdered his girlfriend at a Worli flat on Tuesday morning.
The police said the accused, Ashok, is the son of a prominent person in the city, but refused to give out his full name.
Ashok is absconding and teams have been looking for him to arrest him, police officials said.
That Piya Sardaul, 23, was murdered came to light when her friend found her body in the flat. The Worli police initially registered an accidental death case. Piya’s murder was established when the post mortem report showed she was strangulated and smothered with a pillow when she was sleeping.
The police said Ashok and Piya were staying together for around three months in an apartment on Dr E Moses Road.
But problems began between the couple when Piya started having an affair with another man, an official from the Worli police said.
When Ashok got to know about it, he fought with Piya and also confronted the other person.
“When Piya’s friend found the body on Tuesday, she panicked and could not understand what to do. She did not inform the police for two to three hours, as she was afraid. She finally called us at 3pm,” the officer said.
“Initially, we filed a case of accidental death, but the post mortem report showed Piya was murdered between 5am and 7.30am, when she was asleep. The report also showed the suspect throttled her and smothered her face with a pillow,” the official said.
The Worli police has registered a case under section 302 (punishment for murder) of Indian Penal Code.
“We have launched a search operation. Getting a hold of him is crucial for the case,” said the officer.
