Posing as the employee of a gas agency, a man walked into a 57-year-old woman’s apartment at Kandivli (East) on Wednesday and robbed her gold chain worth Rs 60,000.

The incident took place at Dattani Park near Saidham temple in Kandivli (East), around 4.30pm. The complainant, Swati Joshi, was alone in her second-floor apartment, when the man showed up at her doorstep.

Pretending to be from Mahanagar Gas, the accused told Joshi he had come to get a meter reading.

The man was not in uniform and the police are still in the process of ascertaining if the suspect was from the gas agency.

When Joshi let him into the house, he checked the meter reading and headed for the door. On his way out, he snatched her gold mangalsutra and ran out. The woman raised an alarm and started chasing him.

The accused, however, pushed Joshi and managed to flee from the spot.

Joshi’s husband and son were at work. Her daughter-in-law was not at home either.

The police have checked CCTV footage from the building, but have not found any clues that could help them confirm the identity of the robber.

Meanwhile, the Samta Nagar police have registered a case of robbery and house break-in against the man.
