The LT Marg police on Monday arrested a 38-year-old man who allegedly raped and sexually assaulted his 14-year-old daughter for over four years. He also threatened to kill her by setting her on fire, if she spoke to anyone about the assault, the police said.
The girl earlier lived with her parents and three younger brothers in the servant quarter of a hospital in Pedder Road, but later shifted to Chira Bazar. While her mother works as a sweeper, her father is unemployed.
“When she was 10 years old, her father started molesting her, whenever he found her alone at home. He subsequently raped her and threatened that he would pour kerosene on her if she told anyone about it,” said a sub-inspector, requesting anonymity.
The officer said, “The girl, however, gathered courage and narrated her ordeal to her mother. Fearing social stigma, her mother told her not to tell anyone about the assault. She assured her daughter that she would speak to her husband. Meanwhile, the man kept molesting the girl.”
On Monday, the accused came home drunk. After throwing his wife and three other children out of the house, he tried to rape the teenager again. This time, her mother intervened and rescued the girl with the help of some locals. She then approached the police to lodge a complaint.
“The accused has been arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on charges of rape, molestation and threat,” said Sanjivrao Mandalik, senior inspector of LT Marg police station.
