The Press Club, Mumbai has dropped the sponsorship of 2G scam-tainted realty firm DB Realty for its first-ever “Excellence in Journalism Awards” which is slated to be announced at a function on Tuesday.
President of the Press Club, Gurbir Singh told HT on Monday that the decision to cancel DB Realty’s sponsorship was taken soon after the firm’s name cropped up in the CBI investigations. “Many months ago, DB Realty was shown up as the sponsor for the Press Club awards. However, the moment their involvement in the scam surfaced, we decided to drop them,” Singh said.
DB Realty, Singh said, had pledged R10 lakh for the event. “We have obtained the required finances from our fresh sponsors—the Maharashtra Chambers of Housing Industry (MCHI), L&T and Indusland Bank” Singh said.
The Mumbai Press Club Excellence in Journalism Award-2011 is the first of its kind organised by the club in writing category.
Over the years, the club has been honouring photographers. The award is split into two categories—KN Prabhu Award for Best Cricket Writing for 2010 and Pradeep Shinde Award for the Best Crime Story 2010.
While the late Shinde was a legendary crime reporter, the late KN Prabhu set standards for cricket reporting. While R75,000 cash reward has been announced for the best story in both the categories, the runners up will bag R25,000 each.
Singh said entries for both the categories had been invited from across the country.
The award presentation ceremony will be held at the JK Banquets, Industry Manor, Prabhadevi on Wednesday evening. Former supercop, Julio Ribeiro and former cricketer Ajit Wadekar will present the awards to the winners.
