Failure of the administration in keeping a check on agencies and contractors responsible for flood-control measures is to be blamed for the chaos caused by the heavy rain over the past ten days, the civic standing committee said on Monday.
The committee members demanded that the civic administration take action against contractors in charge of anti-flooding measures.
“The situation is not monitored by civic officials. Dewatering pumps at Bandra and Khar were not working on days when it rained heavily. Why is no action taken against pump operators?” said Asif Zakaria, Congress corporator from Bandra.
Members want the civic body to replicate the action taken against contractors who had not removed barriers placed in the stormwater drains in Byculla which caused flooding in many parts of south and centra Mumbai.
The deputy chief engineer of the stormwater drains department was also suspended.
“Why can’t the civic commissioner use his powers under the Disaster Management Act to act against those responsible for these man-made disasters? Currently, work on projects such as monorail, metro routes is going on in the city. This too has resulted in flooding,” said Rais Shaikh Samajwadi Party corporator.
Rajiv Jalota, additional municipal commissioner, said, “We are tying our best to tackle incidents of water-logging and will ensure that such situations don’t arise in the future.”
