A 29-year-old man, arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a minor and dumping her body on the terrace of a building in police quarters, on Monday approached the sessions court seeking bail.

Mohammad Ajmeri Shaikh, a rickshaw driver, was arrested on March 9 this year for allegedly raping and murdering nine-year-old Anjali Jaiswal.

Anjali had gone missing from her home at Nehru Nagar in suburban Kurla on March 5. Her body was recovered the next day from the terrace of a building in police quarters nearby.

Shaikh, who was arrested on March 9, in his bail plea alleged that the police have falsely implicated him in the case due to the hue and cry created by local people over no action taken by the police.

"On March 5, a group of people had assaulted Shaikh accusing him of committing a theft in the area and had taken him to the police station where he was kept the whole day."

On March 6, Shaikh was undergoing treatment for his injuries at a local hospital and thus the question of him murdering and raping Anjali does not arise," his lawyer Prakash Wagh said.

The lawyer said also the DNA samples taken from the victim and Shaikh do not match.

The court will hear the bail plea on May 20.
