Revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat will review the state's age-old gymkhana policy, where 18 gymkhanas were given prime land for just Rs 2.5 a square foot annually. The lease on 11 gymkhanas lapsed a decade ago.

Membership fees range from between Rs 1-3 lakh annually to Rs 15 lakh upwards for a lifetime membership.

Also, very few actually follow the rule of keeping the space adjoining each gymkhana open to the public.

Most of them - Bombay Gymkhana, Hindu Gymkhana, Parsi Gymkhana and Catholic Gymkhana - are in prime areas in south Mumbai and Bandra.
