With commuters shifting to new modes of transport such as the metro and the monorail, members of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) committee have demanded an allocation of funds from the state and the central government for the revival of the BEST transport wing, which has run huge losses in the last decade.

Committee member Shivji Singh demanded all new modes of transport, including metro and monorail should be brought under the purview of the undertaking.

“BEST has lost its customer base to monorail and metro rail. This should be compensated for by bringing the services under the BEST. Else, the revenue earned from these new ventures should be shared with BEST. We should be compensated for losing our customers,” said Shivji Singh.

Some members said while both the governments are making announcements of new projects, little was being done to upgrade the existing transport infrastructure.

“Today, BEST plies 40 lakh suburban commuters daily, but no announcement was made about giving it additional buses or funds for infrastructural development. While, developing new infrastructure, the government should also ensure that existing infrastructure can sustain itself,” said Kedar Hombalkar, committee member.
