A Mumbai sessions court on Wednesday convicted a woman, her husband and the husband’s friend for strangulating her mother over a property dispute. The trio has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The trio Atul Pawar, Naina Pawar and Atul’s friend Mangesh Bhosle were booked for murder and also charged for threatening Naina’s cousin, who is an eyewitness and who was sleeping next to Kamal Mane, Naina’s mother.

According to the prosecution case, Naina had left her first husband and married Atul. Mane did not approve of her second marriage and was very close to Naina’s son from her first marriage. While making her will, Mane decided to bequeath her house to Naina’s son.

Public prosecutor Sumesh Panjwani said the witness had deposed saying that the couple used to fight with Mane every day. It was stated that at the time of the incident, Naina was pregnant and had delivered a baby in jail. The child will be allowed to stay with its mother for a few years.

“On September 29, 2013, Atul and Mangesh had visited the house and had dinner at home. Later, when they returned, they were drunk. The eyewitness, a cousin of Naina, said she was sleeping next to Mane. Mangesh strangulated Mane, while Atul held her and Naina pressed Mane’s mouth so no one could hear her scream,” Panjwani said.

After the day of the incident, the eyewitness, a minor girl, told the family about the murder and the Mankhurd police registered a murder case against the trio.
