The Kandivli police have arrested two people for allegedly demanding Rs 5 lakh from an employee of a popular international pizza franchise after they claimed to have found a dead lizard in their food.
The two allegedly threatened to defame the pizza chain by giving the news to the media, the police said. The arrested have been identified as Yusuf Salim Shaikh, 23, and Mirza Mudassar Iqbal Baig, 24. The two are unemployed, the police said.
A complaint was filed by Manoj Mohan Kotapuram, a senior executive at the pizza outlet.
According to the police, on Friday night, Shaikh and Baig went to the pizza outlet at Borsapada in Kandivli (West).
“After being served, they said they found a dead lizard. They then started creating a scene with the staff following which Kotapuram arrived and tried to settle the matter,” said a police officer. “But, the two demanded Rs 5 lakh, threatening to defame the pizza chain.”
After hours of bargaining, they agreed to take Rs 2 lakh and said they would return the next day. However, Kotapuram approached the police the same night.
On Saturday, when the duo came to the pizza outlet to collect the money, they were arrested by the police. “The two were produced in court and granted bail,” said inspector Shrikant Mohite,
The police are yet to establish whether they really found a lizard in their food or had brought it along in order to extort money, another officer said.
