An hour after higher education minister Rajesh Tope was summoned by governor K Sankaranarayan to discuss the ongoing problems in the Mumbai University, including issues related to hall tickets, leaked papers and last-minute changes in exam centres, the government announced the appointment of Kumar Bhagwan Khaire, Pune additional collector, as the new registrar of the university.

The higher education department had been facing flak as the post was vacant for nearly two years. Also, the university created a post of director of examinations after a final year BCom paper leaked last week. SA Deo, a principal of Gogate-Joglekar College in Ratnagiri, was appoi-nted for the post.

In an hour-long meeting that took place at Raj Bhavan, the governor, who is the de-facto head of the university, expressed his displeasure at the reluctance of the government to take decisions.

Tope was not available for comments despite repeated attempts.
