Priyanka Gupta held a Thanksgiving party for close friends and relatives at her house on Wednesday evening. Pumpkin pie, cheese rolls and cranberry salad were few of the dishes that were served.

“We held this Thanksgiving dinner together to be thankful for what we have in our life,” said the Santacruz resident.

Thanksgiving, which is usually celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, has become a reason for many Mumbaiites to organise small parties with family and friends.

“I celebrated Thanksgiving Day with a few of my friends on Wednesday,” said Sheeba Rao, a Deutsch Bank employee. “All of us have lived in the US for a few years and we have been celebrating it every year after our return,” she added.

On Friday, there were special prayers at several city churches. “We thank God every day. However, on Thanksgiving Day, we have a special liturgy during the morning Eucharist (prayer), where people thank God for the gift of life or the gift of a child, among other things,” said Father Brendan Furtado from the Holy Cross Church in Vasai.

He added, “Some communities celebrate Thanksgiving after the harvest season, but universally, most families celebrated it on Friday.

Thanksgiving is a popular tradition in foreign countries such as the US, Canada and Germany, where they celebrate this day on a large scale with a dedicated national holiday.

Many citizens who live far away from their family used social media to wish them on Thanksgiving. “I sent a Thanksgiving message via Facebook to my family and friends in New York,” said Sahar D’souza, a Powai resident.
