A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her father and a minor brother many times at their home in Koprigaon in Vashi, with her mother keeping quiet about the assault. Her other brother, also a minor, had molested her.
The survivor, a Class 8 student in a Vashi-based school, had been showing signs of anxiety and had not been talking to anyone in her class, over the past few months.
Taking note of this, her teacher took her into confidence recently and asked her what had been bothering her.
The teenager then told the teacher that her father and elder brother had sexually assaulted her multiple times.
She said that another brother, younger than the older brother, had also tried to molest her recently.
Shocked by the revelation, the teacher informed Kavita Nair, an activist associated with the Chetana Foundation, an NGO, about the sexual assault the girl was being subjected to.
Nair then lodged a complaint against the girl’s two brothers and her father at the APMC police station on Wednesday night.
Acting on the complaint, the police caught the trio.
Senior police inspector Maya More, attached to the APMC police station, said, “The girl’s brothers are both minors. Hence, they were sent to a children’s remand home. Her father was arrested. He was produced in a local court, which remanded him in police custody till April 6.”
More said, “Had the survivor’s mother informed the police about her sexual assault, the accused would have been brought to justice earlier. But she remained silent to save the family’s honour. We will interrogate her mother too. Action will be taken against her if she is found to have been involved in the incident.”
