Mayor Sagar Naik, 25, of the NCP was manhandled by women corporators from the Congress and Shiv Sena at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) headquarters in CBD Belapur, when he refused to take up Navi Mumbai Congress president Dashrath Bhagat’s calling attention motion first on the agenda for the general body meeting.

Opposition members boycotted the proceedings and sat on a dharna outside the hall. While he was leaving, Naik was obstructed by women corporators and a Congress corporator held him by his shirt and pushed him. Deputy mayor Bharat Nakhate was earlier abused when he made his way through the group of protesters, who claimed he had hurt them. A corporator reportedly hit him with footwear.

“I had not said the call attention motion will not be taken up. I said we will first complete regular work,” said Naik. “There is no basis to the allegations [of corruption]. Let them bring proof.”

Bhagat said: “We were not allowed to speak on an issue involving crores of rupees. The administration works under the influence of the ruling party.” Shiv Sena leader Vijayanand Mane said: “We supported the Congress as it concerned corruption. The mayor, his deputy and a corporator trampled on women. We condemn the incident.”

ACP Dilip Jagtap said: “We have taken a statement from the complainants [women corporators].”
