The Nagpada police arrested two persons, of Nepali origin, for allegedly raping a 20-year-old Nepali woman after promising to help her find her husband in Mumbai. A third accused, also involved in the crime, is absconding, said the police.

The woman had reportedly come to the city in search of her husband, who worked in a bag-making unit in Madanpura. When she failed to find him, the three accused, allegedly raped her at different times, under the pretext of providing her shelter.

Following her marriage around two years ago, the victim had stayed in Mumbai for a few months. After going back to her native place for a few months, she returned to Mumbai on Friday, police said. However, when she lost her way and could not find her husband, she approached a shopkeeper for help.

The police said that the shopkeeper, Zulfikar Shaikh, 26, told her that he was unaware about her hsuband’s whereabouts and took the woman to his house under the pretext of providing her shelter.

A senior police officer of Nagpada police said: “The woman was raped by Shaikh in the wee hours and he dropped her off near Baby Garden in the neighbourhood, where Nepali natives in the city catch up with each other.”

There she met Zulfikar’s friend, one of the accused on the run, who met her and took her to a lodge, raped her and left her at Baby Garden.

One of her relatives asked her to meet one Parvez Shaikh, 20, saying he would help her catch a train from CST station. However, Parvez took the woman to a guesthouse in Kamathipura, and raped her around midnight.

Following a tip-off, the police rescued the woman from Kamathipura.
