New 2,000 sq-feet exhibition space for city to get a taste of arts and culture
The Bhau Daji Lad museum in Byculla has opened a 2,000-sq-ft exhibition space to the public this month, with the promise of regular art exhibitions to be held here.The space is currently hosting its first exhibition, a showing of sculptures and installations by Asim Waqif, till December 28.

“This space will be allocated by invitation only, and is dedicated to showing engaging works by artists, galleries and art organisations that have a reputation for creating museum-quality work,” said museum director Tasneem Mehta.
The exhibitors will pay a nominal sum for use of the space.
Art works displayed here will be for exhibition only and not for sale.
Alongside the new exhibition space, in the same annex to the main museum building, is a new, 1,000-sq-ft audio-visual room that will be used for lectures, workshops and educational seminars. Regular music programmes and theatre performances will also be held in this annex.
“Most museums around the world have facilities to engage with the people of the community,” says Mehta. “The expansion of this museum is being planned with a view to engaging students and young adults. The idea is to make this space a cultural adda, where people come to hang out and get a taste of art and culture.”
Also on the anvil are a new cafeteria and a museum shop, expected to be completed by March.
