Nitesh Rane, son of state revenue minister Narayan Rane, was on Thursday arrested by police for allegedly leading a violent mob demonstrating outside the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) against water cuts in the metropolis.

Nitesh was later produced before a metropolitan magistrate in south Mumbai, which granted him bail on a surety of Rs 5,000.

He was remanded in judicial custody till December 16 after, which he sought bail.

Around 3,000 persons led by Nitesh and his city-based NGO Swabhiman today demonstrated outside the BMC demanding reduction in the 30 per cent water cut in the city.

Protesters from Thane, Mulund, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai participated in this rally. Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

The lathi-charge resulted in the death of a protester, Viral Dholakiya (43) at GT Hospital and injured several others.
