While mandals in the city boast of astronomical cash prizes for govindas, some groups claim that they have not yet been paid the prize money they won last year.
Geeta Zhagde, president of the Parle Sports Club Mahila Dahi Handi Pathak, said that the team did not receive Rs50,000 as promised at Congress MLA Bhai Jagtap’s mandal in Jogeshwari last year. “The girls made six tiers for which the organisers had promised Rs50,000. We were offered only Rs 5,000, which we refused to take,” said Zhagde. “We will definitely not visit that mandal again,” she added.
Jagtap said the group misunderstood the rules. “The group did not complete the task for which Rs 50,000 was allotted. Giving the money is not a big deal for me,” Jagtap said.
Recently, several representatives of govinda groups in the city met to discuss the issue. “I suggested all groups record the event to keep proof of their achievements. They should also take pictures of banners where the prize money has been mentioned,” said Arun Patil, coach, Mazgaon Tadwadi group.
Groups who received their prize money last year, utilised the money for education as well as picnics.
Sewri’s Bal Mitra Mandal went on a picnic to a resort in Arnala and saved the remaining Rs 50,000 for expenditures this year.
