The two thieves had apparently tried a couple of tricks to divert the attention of Mushtaq Ahmed, the gun-toting security man guarding the van. One was to drop a magazine with obscene pictures, and the other was to drop wads of cash. Police say it was carelessness on the part of the employees of the security agency to blame for the theft.

The accused had placed a Hindi magazine turned to the page with an obscene picture, near the van belonging to Securitrans India Pvt Ltd. A police officer from Mahim police station said the magazine was found in the same position when they arrived at the scene.”

A police officer added that the thieves had also dropped some wads of Rs 10 notes, under and around the magazine to distract Ahmed. After their colleagues, Surendra Jadhav and Pintu Yadav, went inside the bank ATM to deposit the money, Ahmed stood just outside the door of the van, while the driver, Akhilesh Yadav, stood on the other side.

The thieves approached Ahmed and asked him for directions to some RTOs. “When Mushtaq said he was new to the city, the thieves starting telling him something he claims he could not understand,” a police officer said. One of the thieves then pointed to a wad of notes lying on the ground. As Ahmed’s attention was diverted, the other thief took the trunk.

Vinay Kulkarni, inspector, Mahim police station said, “Another mistake was that the door of the van was not locked. Normally, such vans have a facility whereby the door of the van once locked cannot be opened from the outside.”
