The Nagpur Municipal Corporation  has taken serious cognisance of the huge waste of precious water  by spiritual guru Asaram in Nagpur in a pre-Holi celebration, even as the state is facing the worst ever drought. The NMC has served a show cause notice to the organiser of Asaram’s discourses in Nagpur on Monday.

The local civic body supplied three water tankers to the organisers after it applied for providing drinking water for the disciples who gathered at the Kasturchand Park Ground for the spiritual discourses on Sunday. However, the spiritual guru used herbal colours in those tankers and showered it on the devotees.

The issue even figured in both the houses of the state legislature in Mumbai during the on-going budget session on Monday where the agitated members demanded action against the organisers. MNS Bala Nandgaonkar slammed the organisers for wasting water.

Earlier, several activists staged noisy demonstration outside the venue in Nagpur to protest against the misuse of water.

Shyam Wardhane, the municipal commissioner of NMC confirmed, said: “We have sought an explanation as to why commercial charges should not be imposed on them after they misused the water which was taken for drinking purpose,” he said.

On the other hand, Asaram Bapu has denied any wastage of water in Nagpur, saying more water is used to have a bath.

Issuing a statement here on Monday, he said that only one tanker was used by thousands of people.  “We will continue to play holi water in other places and states,” he further said.
