State board students can now choose to write the class 12 science and math exams in languages other than English.
According to a circular issued by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) on December 1, science students will be provided with question papers in Marathi, Hindi and Urdu along with English in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.
"Earlier the option of appearing for these papers in regional languages was allowed for students who could not cope with English but only with prior permission. With the new circular, students can voluntarily choose the desired language to answer the exam," said a state board official requesting anonymity.
Many city colleges have welcomed the state board's decision.
"It is a good attempt by the state board to facilitate the vernacular students to write exams in the language they studied in till the class 10," said Rehana Salamat Shaikh, principal, Anjuman-I-Islam Jr. college of Science & Commerce, CST.
She added, "It is a great opportunity for students to prove their potential and will help increase confidence among them."
The circular has also brought much needed relief to parents of students who study in non-English medium schools across the city.
Parents who are unbale to afford the fees of English medium schools are grateful for the new decision.
"My child studies in a Marathi medium municipal school since I could not afford a convent school. Though I want my daughter to become a doctor, I was always worried as to how she will cope with higher level English in college," said Varsha More, a domestic caretaker, Worli.
"This step will also make science accessible to the masses," she added.
