On Thursday evening, a class full of children at Bandra’s Father Agnel Ashram received more than their daily English lesson. They were given belated Christmas gifts sent to them by the US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

The non-profit group, Make A Difference (MAD), which conducts English classes for underprivileged kids, had interacted with Michelle when the Obamas visited the city last November.

The Christmas presents arrived late last month, but were distributed among the students from Wednesday, when classes resumed after the winter break.

“We felt happy and grateful that she thought of us,” said Vicky Ganatra, 14, a student, who had danced with Michelle.

“She had said she would miss us. The presents reminded us of her love.”

The 400-odd gift sets — mainly stationery items like magic markers, notebooks and sketch books — will be distributed across five centres in the city and nine other cities.

Tanmay Arora, president of MAD, also received a letter from Michelle. “She said that she had been impressed to see young people doing such good work," said Arora.
