An offence has been lodged against the head of department of the Mumbai University for allegedly trying to intimidate a professor.
Additional public prosecutor, Madhvi Mhatre informed the Bombay High Court on Thursday that the police lodged an offence against Vasanti Kadiraman, head of physical education.
The offence has been lodged following a complaint from Vishambhar Jadhav, a professor with the University. The offence has been lodged under the Indian Penal Code, the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Protection of Civil Rights Act.
Jadhav’s advocate, Gunaratan Sadavarte, said his client had gone to Kadiraman to inquire about his salary arrears, after which Kadiraman allegedly asked another professor to assault Jadhav.
Jadhav fell unconscious and was admitted to a government hospital, Sadavarte said. Some of Jadhav’s important documents and gold chain went missing. Sadavarte alleged that Kadiraman is anti-Marathi. Hence he lodged a complaint under the scheduled caste Act.
Jadhav’s petition alleges that Kadiraman threatened to implicate him on false sexual harassment charges, as she had with another lecturer. Another petition was filed last week by Sachin Shinde, an assistant professor of Physical Education who was forced to resign.
Shinde also alleged that he was discriminated against because he was Maharashtrian.
