One person was killed and three others sustained serious burn injuries aboard the merchant vessel Star Art, docked at Powder Bunder in Sewri late Saturday evening.

The person who died has been identified as Sanjay Vijay Swahe, 26, who was using a gas cylinder while doing some fabrication work, along with Narayan Kashi, 30, Seema Bahera, 28, and Dona Pradhan, 50, when a fire broke out. Kashi and Bahera sustained 80% burns while Pradhan suffered 60% burn injuries.

Inspector PR Patil from Sewri police station said the incident took place around 7.30pm on Saturday. The victims were involved in welding work using a gas cylinder on the Star Art ship docked at Powder Bandar in Sewri. “We suspect there was a gas leak from one of the cylinders may come into contact with sparks flying during the cutting work that resulted in a fire,” Patil said.

“We have registered a case of death due to negligence against the contractor Kishor Prajapati, 52, Girish Singh, 35, supervisor and Batla Dalai, 32. The accused have not been arrested so far,” he said.

Fire brigade sources said two engines and an ambulance had been sent to the spot after receiving the message.
