A private stevedore, working on a police patrol boat suffered minor burns after the boat accidentally caught fire when it had just returned from patrolling near the Bandra jetty around 9 on Sunday morning.

A police sub-inspector (PSI) from the Sagri police station at Mahim told HT that the fire in the boat was probably caused due to a short-circuit, though further investigation was on to establish the exact cause.

The boatman, Mali Ramanand, had suffered minor burns on his face and has been admitted to the burns ward at the Sion hospital for treatment.

The police added that along with Ramanand there were two police personnel and another private help (porter) on the boat when the incident took place.

Fortunately, they escaped unhurt.

Deputy commissioner of police, Zone 2, Anil Humbhare (who is currently officiating as the head of the port zone) said it was a minor fire and was brought under control immediately.
