A 16-year-old boy riding pillion died while his brother suffered minor injuries after a tanker crashed into their bike at Mithchowki in Malad on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Neeraj Mourya. His brother Deshraj, 33, was discharged after being administered first aid.

The driver of the tanker, Dharmaraj Yadav, was arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving, culpable homicide not amounting to murder and for endangering safety of others.

The Bangur Nagar police said the incident took place around 3.30pm when the brothers were on their way to Malad station from Marve.

The tanker hit the bike from the rear, making Deshraj lose control of the vehicle. Yadav, however, fled the spot and was caught by police at Goregaon Link Road.

"Locals informed the police, which resulted in the early arrest of the accused," said a police officer from Bangur Nagar police station.

Deshraj told the police that Neeraj came to Mumbai 10 days ago from their native place Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh and lived in the Malwani area.
