The Shani Temple at Nerul will be illuminated with one lakh sesame (til) oil lamps on the eve of Shiv Jayanti on June 1 from 6am to 11pm.

The temple authorities say that the unique programme is to thwart evils like corruption and terrorism and to invoke Lord Shani’s grace for the welfare of the people and the strength of the nation. There will be Annadaan and Mahaprasad sessions in the temple at 12pm and 8pm respectively.

“This event is for the welfare of the people. Til oil is very dear to Lord Shani, hence we are lighting lamps of sesame oil as a dedication to Him,” said senior corporator and chairman of the temple, Santosh Shetty.

“Every Saturday, known as the auspicious day of Lord Shani, thousands of devotees line up to dedicate til oil to Him. We have kept a coupon system for systematic lighting of lamps and for everyone to get a chance. Coupons are available for Rs5 or Rs10 each,” said Shetty.

“Three poor, needy patients are given financial assistance of Rs5000 each every week by the trust since nine years,” said Ramesh Poojari, head, temple.
