The Opposition, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena, created a ruckus in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday accusing a certain community of slaughtering cows in the communally-sensitive town of Malegaon in northern Maharashtra.

At least eight cows were found killed near Malegaon, off Manmad road, on Wednesday. Agitated MLAs demanded a ban on cow slaughter and stalled House proceedings when their demand was not met.

Opposition Leader Eknath Khadse told the House that some people were trying to create communal tension in the state by slaughtering cows on Aashadhi Ekadashi (which was celebrated on Wednesday), an auspicious day for Hindus.

Khadse said he suspected the involvement of a certain community. “We must have a law banning cow slaughter in the state,” he said.

Home Minister R.R. Patil said the killing of the cows is being probed and promised strict action against the culprits but his reply did not satisfy the Opposition.

After multiple adjournments, the day’s business was called off in the afternoon and a discussion on law and order had to be postponed.
