The Oshiwara police on Friday tried to approach Dr Tanaz Irani, who has been accused of torturing her maid Jyoti, but found her residence locked. A case of causing hurt using dangerous and wrongful restraint has been registered against Irani and her mother Gover.

Jyoti, 20, had been working as a maid at the Irani house since August last year after being recommended by Jerry Rodrigues, who had been taking care of Jyoti and her younger sister ever since their father passed away. According to Rodrigues, Irani had initially complained about Jyoti's efficiency but had continued to employ her.

Jyoti alleged that the family tortured her by pouring hot water on her and slashing her with a knife. "I was shocked to hear this since I knew the family for a long time," said Rodrigues. Jyoti was sent to Cooper hospital for a medical test, following which a case was registered by the Oshiwara police against the Iranis.
