There are over 2.3 lakh illegal structures in Thane district and nearly 16,000 of these have been demolished since 2003.
An affidavit filed by a deputy commissioner of Thane states that there are 2,36,462 illegal structures in Thane district of which over 75,000 are in Kalwa.
The high court heard a PIL filed by Harit Vasai Sanrakshan Samiti seeking a curb on illegal constructions in Thane.
Government pleader S.R. Nargolkar said the government will introduce special laws to prevent illegal construction. The government was also contemplating making ward officers liable for illegal structures in their area.
Each civic body will have to provide for special police stations and special courts for cases of illegal construction, said Nargolkar. “You (government) do not have regular judges for regular courts, how will you get judges for these special courts?” asked Justice J.N. Patel.
The Bhiwandi-Badlapur Corporation said it did not have funds to set up special police stations or courts. CIDCO said that it did not receive police protection during demolition of illegal constructions. The HC has asked the chief secretary to file affidavit on the status of demolitions by February 3.
