Over 7,000 will run Vasai-Virar marathon

Over 7,000 runners will participate in Vasai-Virar Mayor's Marathon which will flag off at 7am on Sunday.

Nine races will be held across various categories. In addition to the customary 42.195km marathon for men and 21.0975km half-marathon for women, there will be races for senior citizens and young adults as well.

To lend support to the event, athlete PT Usha, who is also the event ambassador, long distance runner Kavita Raut, hockey legend Dhanraj Pillay and India's newest hockey star Yuvraj Valmiki will be present.

Rajiv Patil, mayor of Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, said: "The corporation is committed to providing a satisfying running experience to all the participants."

Ambassador for the event PT Usha said, "A mass participation event like the marathon is the best platform to promote health and fitness and encourage more youngsters to start running."

Prominent athletes who have confirmed participation in Sunday's event include Lyngkhoi Bining, Deepchand Saharan, Sagar Mane and Kalidas Dahipule in the men's full marathon, and Lalita Babbar, Monica Atre, Kiran Tiwari and Sangita Yadav in women's half marathon.
