A martial arts instructor, who claims to be a consultant for the counter-terror unit, Force One, was arrested for stabbing a painter he suspected of having an affair with his wife.
The victim, Selvakumar Gounder (32), a Dharavi local, is recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit at Lokmanya Tilak hospital at Sion. Dharavi police said that on Friday evening, Gounder went to his attacker Christoraj Fernandes’s (45) house to ask why Fernandes had come looking for him on Friday.
Gounder’s father-in-law, Ganesh Naidu (62) had told him that Fernandes had been in a foul mood when he had come looking for him. The victim and attacker both live in the same locality in the sprawling slums.
Fernandes was home when Gounder went there in the evening. “On seeing Gounder, Fernandes lost his temper and attacked him with a knife. He fled after stabbing Gounder repeatedly,” said Prabhakar Satam, assistant commissioner of police, Kurla division. Gounder was injured on his head, neck and left eye. He was bleeding profusely and rushed to the hospital by his neighbours, Satam added.
Fernandes was arrested from another locality in Dharavi on Saturday evening.
During interrogation, Fernandes is learnt to have told police that he suspected Gounder of having an affair with his second wife. Gounder is employed on contract as a painter with a construction company. Gounder and Fernandes’ second wife are from the same village in Tamil Nadu and have known each other for a long while.
“This was the genesis of the suspicion,” Satam added.
“Fernandes’ suspicion became stronger after he had spotted the two chatting in the area for long hours on numerous occasions. That upset him tremendously,” Satam added.
Fernandes had planned to attack Gounder at the latter’s home, which is why he had gone there on Friday morning.
“We are trying to verify his claim of being a consultant for Force One,” Satam added.
