A six-member core committee comprising school education and higher education department officials will examine a proposal to reduce the weightage given to bifocal (vocational) subjects in the Class 12 exam, said a new government resolution (GR) issued by the education department on Monday.
“The state board had made the proposal last year and the committee will deliberate on whether to reduce the weightage of the bifocal subject from 200 marks to 100 marks from this academic year,” said S Khorgade, under secretary, school education department, who issued the GR.
Students who opt for the bifocal stream appear for exams in five subjects wherein they are marked out of 100 in four subjects and out of 200 in the fifth vocational subject.
Other students appear for 100-mark exams in six subjects, one more than bifocal stream students. “The stream was originally meant for students wishing to pursue vocational courses after Class 12, but over the years, students have been using it as a scoring option since they can study one subject less,” said a government official, on condition of anonymity
A parent group, Maha Palak Sanstha, had petitioned the board last year on the matter, on the grounds that students who appeared for the bifocal stream had an advantage over other students because they could study one subject less.
The new core committee’s decision on the matter will be forwarded to the government.
