A 20-year-old a marine engineer committed suicide at his Andheri residence early on Sunday because his parents were against his alleged affair with a woman elder to him.

Vinayak Hotkar, a resident of Ratnasamooh society at DN Nagar hanged himself at 12.30 am on Sunday when he was alone at home. His parents had gone to visit some relatives.

The woman, who he was in love with, had come to stay in their neighbourhood a year ago and was reportedly introduced to him by common friends.

Dilip Suryavanshi, assistant commissioner of police (DN Nagar area), said Hotkar's parents had come to know about their affair and were against it. They had discussed it with him but could not convince him to break up with the woman.

"When his parents came home and did not get any response after knocking repeatedly, they broke open the door and saw Hotkar hanging," said Suryavanshi.

His father Pandharinath, a retired Merchant Navy officer, informed the police who reached the spot and sent the body to Cooper hospital for post mortem.

The police found a suicide note written by Hotkar on his bed. The note said that neither his parents nor the world would understand his feelings and that is why he was ending his life.

"He also apologised to his parents for giving them a difficult time," said an officer.

"Hotkar pleaded with his parents, through the note, to call his girlfriend to his funeral," added the officer.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating further.

"We are awaiting the post mortem report to ascertain the cause of death. Hotkar’s parents were in a state of shock so we have not been able to record their statements," said another officer.

The police are planning to record the woman's statement to get more clues.
