Demanding the implementation of Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) for slum redevelopment in Mumbai, social activist Medha Patkar and a group of five slum dwellers will meet the Union minister of housing and urban poverty alleviation, Kumari Selja, in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Currently, slums in Mumbai are redeveloped under the slum rehabilitation (SR) scheme managed by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA).
RAY is a central government scheme under the Slum free City Planning Scheme for the slumdwellers and urban poor.

While RAY gives the property rights to the slum dwellers, SR scheme decides the eligibility of the residents for getting new houses on the basis of cut-off dates. Moreover, under the SR scheme, the slum dwellers do not get a right over the property.

Said Patkar: “We will meet the housing minister and present our demand for the implementation of RAY.”

Earlier, Patkar had threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike from May 2 if the state government didn’t pay heed to their demands.
