A social organisation on Monday approached the Bombay high court seeking directions to BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state government to demolish the temporary structure at Shivaji Park put up at the spot where Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray was cremated on November 18.

Bahujan Lead Union of Educated has filed the public interest litigation (PIL) through advocate Gunratan Sadavarte saying anti-social elements might cause mischief leading to a law and order situation on December 6 when thousands of followers of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar gather at the ground.

Advocate Sadavarte said the PIL was mentioned for urgent hearing before a division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and justice Anoop Mohta and the bench has posted it for December 6. The petitioner has in its PIL claimed that on several issues Thackeray’s views differed from those of Ambedkar and it could happen that some anti-social elements cause mischief.

The PIL further contends that Shivaji Park is a playground and is required to be protected, as it is the only open space available to citizens residing between Bandra and Dadar, for recreation as well as sporting events.
