The 17-year-old pizza delivery boy, who attempted to rape and murder a 22-year-old woman who had ordered pizza, thought the victim would die and he would get away with the crime, the Worli police said.
The victim has suffered serious injuries, but is said to be out of danger.
Eight hours after the accused fled the victim’s Worli residence, around 3.45am, the police tracked him down to his home in Worli Koliwada. The Class 7 dropout was calm and did not resist arrest or create a scene, officials said, adding that his parents were shocked.
Investigation moved at a fast pace once the police obtained the victim’s mobile number and got her call records from her mobile service provider.
The police found that her last dialled number was to the Prabhadevi-based Chovisam Pizza and contacted the owner, who was shocked to see policemen at his doorstep. “He said he called the delivery boy when he failed to return for a long time and he told him that he was stuck in a nakabandi. The owner then left for the victim’s home to check if she had got the delivery, but met the accused mid-way. He told the owner the delivery had been made,” said Vinayak Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police (zone 3).
The police took action after the victim gave a description of her attacker around 1am.
When HT called Chovisam Pizza, the outlet manager who identified himself as Ketan said: “We employed him as he was from a poor family and needed a job. He told us he was a major (18 years and above).”
The police have got a medical report from Nair hospital, which states that the accused is a juvenile, which could pose problems for the outlet.
“We are checking if the manager checked the accused’s antecedents before hiring him. We will take legal opinion to assess if the owner can be booked,” Deshmukh said.
