The police, on Monday, went into damage control mode, apologising for a leak of an internal circular by the intelligence unit that said a wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind was training women for Jihad.

Members of the Muslim community met additional commissioner of police (special branch) Naval Bajaj on Monday to seek clarification on the circular.

An internal circular by the special branch, the intelligence wing of the city police, had mentioned that the Girls’ Islamic Organisation, which is part of the JIH’s women’s wing, was training girls for jihad. The circular, a fortnightly report, was issued to 20 members of the Mumbai police in the first week of March.

Bajaj said he apologised to members of the delegation. “We cannot hold back information and have to give it to our field commanders so that they are aware of the situation,” he said. “I cannot guarantee the veracity of the information or the source of it. I apologised for the fact that the information was leaked to the media, but I am not guilty of the content,” Bajaj said.

The Islamic organisation had earlier threatened legal action against the special branch if they did not apologise, but after the meeting on Monday, the members decided against it. “He [Bajaj] requested us for a written letter which we will send. Depending on his response, we will decide on a future course of action,” said Taufiq Aslam Khan, Maharashtra president, JIH.

Bajaj said the matter of the information leak would be looked into officially. “My priority is now to identify who leaked the information and take action. I will start a departmental inquiry into the matter and ensure proper charges are framed,” he said.
He said the leak was ‘disastrous’. “This will only add to the sense of alienation between the minority community and the government, and is also detrimental to our organisation,” Bajaj said.

JIH leaders said they would lodge an FIR against Marathi paper Saamna for carrying objectionable photos with the report.
