The MIDC police on Sunday claimed to have solved the murder of a 38-year-old woman whose throat had been slit in front of her 12-year-old son on Thursday. The killers had tied the son to a chair while they murdered the woman.
According to the police, the accused did not know the victim, Aruna Pandey, personally – as suspected earlier – and the motive behind the killing was robbery after all.
Inspector Mohan Waghmare of MIDC police station said Yusuf Khwaja Sayyed, 25, who allegedly slit Pandey’s throat, and his accomplices Kartik Kaunder, 25, and Zuber Ahmed Idrisi, 23 – all residents of Prem Nagar and Janata Nagar areas of Jogeshwari (East) have been arrested.
He said the three, who are drug addicts, had barged into the residence of Aruna Pandey at Takshila Society with the intention of robbing the house.
Senior inspector Suresh Hujband said the accused had tried barging into two other houses unsuccessfully.
“As the main door of the Pandey household was open. Seeing this, the three accused barged inside. When Aruna refused to hand over her gold chain and started shouting for help they murdered her.” The accused also stole three mobile phones kept in the victim’s house.
According to the police, the accused had run out of money and hence planned the robbery. Sayyad and Kunder have previous police records. “We will be producing them before the court on Monday. We are still to find out if there was any particular reason they required the money so urgently.”
The police had earlier suspected that the deceased was murdered in connection with a loan her husband had taken.
