The police booked 2,459 people for various offences during Holi celebrations.
Deputy commissioner of police, operations, Rajkumar Vhatkar said the police cracked the whip on drunken and indecent behaviour in public places, miscreants throwing water balloons and traffic offenders (including driving drunk) on Sunday.
Vhatkar said 49 people were booked for playing music on loudspeakers without permission while 26 others were rounded up for throwing water balloons.
Several people had landed up in hospitals with injured eyes caused after being hit by water balloons.
Vhatkar said around 179 history-sheeters had been rounded up as a preventive measure, while 582 had been booked for unruly behaviour in public places under the influence of alcohol.
While the police booked 361 motorists for driving drunk, the traffic police claimed to have arrested 497 drunk drivers in the same period.
While the traffic police booked 54 motorists for rash and dangerous driving, 107 were booked for violating traffic rules, and 604 others for petty offences such as fights.
Vhatkar said the police, along with the traffic police, had made elaborate security arrangement for the day.
More than 2,500 personnel from the Mumbai police’s reserve force had also been deployed.
