The Govandi police have, on directions from the Bombay high court, registered an FIR against officials and staffers of the Navjivan Mahila Vastugriha, the women's shelter home at Mankhurd that came under the police scanner after a run-away inmate mate alleged that women at the home were often subjected to criminal intimidation and were also raped repeatedly.

“After the high court order, we have registered a case in this regard,” said Laxmi Gautam, deputy commissioner of police (Zone VI).

Medical superintendent of the shelter Shobha Shelar and ex-superintendent and probationary officer S Dighe have been made accused in the FIR, along with some staffers working in the shelter home, police said.

Some unidentified accused have also been charged with rape in the report as the inmate had mentioned that armed men had raped her and her fellow inmates at night.

The accused have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for offences including rape, intentional insult, criminal intimidation and an act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

“Only one case has been made. The investigations will further reveal the charges against accused,” said Gautam.

Dr Harish Shetty, who was part of the high court committee that looked into cases of sexual and verbal assault on the inmates said, “We had suggested some legal sections that the police have omitted. The police should investigate the case in all urgency.”
