The Shivaji Nagar police have prepared a sketch of the woman suspected of stealing a two-month-old boy from a civic health centre in Govandi on Monday morning.
According to sources, the woman, who was following the mother from the bus stop to the health centre, had raised her veil once at the hospital to wipe her face. The mother, Munni Khatun, said she glimpsed her face then. “The burqa-clad woman is in her late twenties, has a round face and fair skin. Based on Khatun’s description, we have made a sketch of the woman,” said an investigating officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The officer added, “We also suspect that the woman in this case and the person in the child kidnappings at VN Desai Hospital and CST, both on October 15, could be the same. Khatun said the woman captured in the footage at the VN Desai hospital seemed to be of the same height and built as the woman in the Govandi case.”
“The stolen child’s mother told us that the burqa-clad woman had travelled on the same bus as her on the way to the health centre. The woman also kept following the victim to whichever department she went to at the health centre. Later, the accused started talking to Khatun asking her how many children she had,” the officer said.
Another factor that came out during investigations is that the woman was accompanied by a young girl. Senior inspector Sripad Kale from crime branch Unit 6 said, “Khatun said the woman told her she was at the health centre to take medicines for the girl.” But, when Khatun’s elder son was approached by the woman, the young girl was not with her.
The police are also checking railway stations, bus stops and are combing the Shivaji Nagar area in search of the baby.
