The MHB colony police on Friday arrested the third accused, a 25-year-old man, for allegedly gang-raping a 22-year-old housewife at her Borivli (West) residence earlier this week.
Sanjay Chandrika Yadav has been remanded in police custody till May 10 after being produced before a metropolitan court, the police said.
According to the police, Yadav, an autorickshaw driver, was arrested from near his residence at Ganpat Patil Nagar slums at 4am on Friday.
“His last location, which was tracked through his cellphone on Tuesday was Kurla railway station. He had fled to his village in Uttar Pradesh. We got a tip off that he was back home,” said Suresh Kilje, senior inspector, MHB Colony police station.
The police said Yadav was married and had a four-year-old son.
“They are expecting another child,” said the officer.
“It has been learnt that Yadav has a criminal record. We are in the process of gathering details," he added.
Yadav, the police said, had been arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 376(g) for gang rape and 506 for criminal intimidation along with the two other accused, Harish aka Jeetu Nageen Dantani, 25, and Sunny Sultan Singh, 25. The previous arrests were made on Tuesday.
The police said the medical report of the victim confirmed that she had been raped.
On Monday night, while the victim was with her husband at her residence in the slum, three men from the couple’s neighbourhood barged into their house and assaulted them with a chopper.
While two of the men held the victim’s husband at knifepoint, the third one raped her. The other two then took turns to rape the woman, the police said.
According to the police, the other two accused are also history-sheeters.
