The Sakinaka police will question the mother of the 12-year-old girl who had allegedly been raped by nine men, including a 72-year-old, over a period of two years.
Senior inspector Samadhan Dhanedhar said on Sunday that her mother will come from Gujarat on Monday evening. The police had summoned her as, according to them, she could be an important witness.
“After the girl’s medical reports proved negative we have been collecting as many witnesses as possible and the mother will be an important one,” said Samadhan Dhanedhar, senior inspector.
Two tests were conducted on the girl — at JJ hospital on Thursday and at Nagpada police hospital on Tuesday. The reports said her hymen was not ruptured and there were no external injuries near her private parts.
The girl, a resident of Sakinaka in Andheri (East), had filed a rape case against nine men including her cousin brother last week. The police had arrested four men in the case and are trying to trace the rest.
“The girl’s parents stayed together in the city till 2005, after which they got divorced and went back to Gujarat. Her mother remarried two months ago,” said an officer, who is part of the investigating team.
The girl’s mother, who was initially reluctant to get involved in the case, was summoned by the police to record her statement on Saturday.
The police will question the mother to find out if in the past two years her daughter had ever approached her and revealed anything about the rape. “The mother often visited her. We will ask her whether she noticed anything peculiar during her visits,” added Dhanedhar.
Meanwhile, the victim’s neighbour said the girl’s mother used to visit her often and was seen sitting with her outside the house.
Dhanedhar also said that Dhaval Bapat, the victim’s cousin who is absconding, will be arrested within a day as he is in Mumbai.
