A day after Sahil Malik, 28, was remanded to judicial custody in connection with the murder of his former girlfriend and model Rinky Chowdhury, the police are trying to get his custody.

The 28-year-old model was found dead in her Goregaon flat on October 28. The police arrested Malik two days later.

The police will now get a detailed statement of the doctors who conducted a post-mortem on Chowdhury and also get the telephone conversation between Chowdhury and Malik’s Delhi-based girlfriend Shamli Jain had a few hours before her death analysed.

“The circumstantial evidence and the medical reports are against Malik. Based on these reports we will be preparing a charge sheet which we will produce in the court and try to seek Malik’s custody,” said senior inspector Surendra Paithankar of the Goregaon police station.

The medical examination of Chowdhury’s body indicated that she had been strangled as ligature marks were found on her neck, which is not the case if a person commits suicide, and she had internal head injuries.

Also, the fan from which the model had apparently hanged herself was not damaged, which raised suspicion to Malik’s theory that she had committed suicide.

Usually when a person hangs from the ceiling fan, it gets damaged. However, in Chowdhury’s case the fan was not,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

The police are also trying to trace Shivendu Shekhar, a common friend of Chowdhury and Malik, who could turn out to be an important witness in the case.
