Police unclear about the section

While the Palghar police was quick to slap section 66A of the IT Act on Shaheen Dhada and her friend Rinu Srinivasan, they appeared to be confused about the basics of the section.

Senior inspector Srikant Pingle from Palghar police station played it down saying the section was bailable - an offence for which bail can be got at the police station itself.

When it was pointed out that the section was non-bailable, Pingle corrected himself, but added (wrongly), "The section is non-cognisable". Section 66A of the IT Act is cognisable, under which police can arrest without a warrant.
