A 45-year-old postman was arrested on Saturday on charges of rape and bigamy. Prakash Bagul’s (45) second wife, Vaishali (name changed), filed a complaint against him on February 24.

“Bagul was arrested on charges of rape, cheating and bigamy. He has been remanded to police custody till April 14,” said senior inspector Maruti Rathod of the Malad police station. Vaishali works as a telephone booth operator.

The police said the couple got married in 2007 and do not have any children.

“In 1986, Bagul tied the knot with his first wife and has a child from her. They stay in Gorai,” said an officer.

Prior to the marriage with the complainant, Bagul had proposed to her and told her that he was single. Even after marriage, he did not tell her that he was already married.

The police said that after the marriage, Vaishali became suspicious of Bagul’s behaviour. “Bagul would talk for long hours over the phone and when she questioned him about the calls, he made excuses. On several occasions, she had overheard the conversations and she realised that he was taking to a woman,” said an officer.

She separated from him and lodged a complaint.
